The stone feels smooth but it's very durable. I like the two different edges and the hook sharpening part, giving it a better variety in ways it can be used. I've already used it to sharpen a couple of knives and they are considerably sharper now! About the only complaint I have (and it's a very minor detail) is that it's not plain. Originally you couldn't choose what the stone looked like, but then they eventually added the option of plain or patterned. I wanted a plain one and chose that, but ended up with a patterned one.
