"Verily," quoth he, "there is only so much cod medieval language that a man can take in a book." Or, to put it another way, if people are speaking colloquially, why can't they sound colloquial? Frankly, Chaucer is more up-to-date. Stylistically awkward, and since the novel clearly relies on the charm of its prose rather than plot or characterisation in its search for excellence, that's a bit of a problem.
