Very Surface Level and Weirdly Opinionated

*by B***A on Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2020*

Very surface level, and really just covering surface level of surface level of Volume 1. Also is weirdly opinionated rather than just an objective recounting of Marx, declaring all societies that claimed to be socialist inspired by Marx were not TRUE socialism and that TRUE socialism has never been tried, and then proceeds to paint socialism as a utopia where everyone is happy. It's fine to have your own opinion but putting it in a book supposedly simply a recounting of an academic text is just... odd. I don't really feel like it explains historical materialism well, and the lack of this analysis with the painting of capitalism as harmful to the workers and socialism as a utopia for them seems to give off the impression that Marx advocated for socialism because it was a morally better system for the workers. Which is like, the exact position Marx criticized, but I feel like many who read this book would get that false impression. Putting a big section in the book to take a big dump on all the Marxist movements in the global south that drastically raised the living standards of a billion people is also just a bit insulting. This is a white western leftcom book and not a Marxist book. I'm not saying the author has to agree with my opinions... but why is it even in there? If you're just trying to introduce someone to Marxism, randomly hitting them with things like this is dirty. It's like trickery, you are posing this as a book to summarize Marx's opinions then fitting your own opinions in there to trick them to think they're the same as Marx's. It's dirty and dishonest. Just leave them out of the book. Make a separate book for those opinions.

This is a very good introduction to the ideas in Capital and a good resource to flip through if you want a quick refresher of a specific concept

This text ain't half bad. I was having an awful time attempting to trudge thru the wordy Das Kapital, this helps ease the difficulty quite I bit.The text explains exchangeability, the role of money, and so on.I also ordered it alongside Jobin-Leeds "When We Fight, We Win: Twenty-First-Century Social Movements and the Activists That Are Transforming Our World 1st Edition". Glad I did, because whoever authored this tries to really downplay revolution. Here is the Jacobin-Leeds book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1620970937/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_0Or maybe they were trying to downplay accelerationism, which is understandable.EDIT: The first time I submitted this review, it was not accepted. When I looked thru the guidelines, I could not find anything in it that went against it.Wondering if it is just a glitch or perhaps anti-Marx sentiment. Not sure.
