A comprehensive study of music from the last 55 years
For true music lovers that grew up in the Washington, D.C. area since the mid 60's the number one place to go and actually listen to music was the Birchmere. You'd see the current singers and songwriters and get a preview of the coming artists. Gary had a knack for recognizing the big artists around the corner. Nothing has changed. The Birchmere still has the best of the past, the present and the future of the kind of music that you just want to listen to. This book chronicles the history of this great venue from it's inception in 1966 to the present. It's stories and interviews will have you laughing one minute and bringing you to tears the next. If you love music, you need this book.

A great book about a great venue
I can't recommend this book enough. This book provides the history, the stories, the artist, and the importance of the Birchmere, not only for the DMV area but to the music world, and the amazing people that have worked there through the years. I highly recommend this book to anyone who as been to the Birchmere (if you haven't been go - it is one of the best music venues in the country), want to go to the Birchmere, interested in music, care about the history and music in the DMV area, or just a fan of music in general.

Perfect birthday gift for my "legendary" husband
It's nearly impossible to buy gifts for a guy that buys himself everything he wants.. It's a good thing I ordered the book on Amazon before he insisted on going over to the Birchmere to pick up a copy when we were in NoVa last week. As longtime Birchmere fans, the book brings back memories of the greatest music hall ever. The Birch is one of the things we miss most since we moved to North Carolina. Congratulations to Gary and the rest of the Birchmere family (you too Stuart). The book is fabulous!

Great Music History
Y'all like music? This is a great new book about the legendary Birchmere Music Hall in Alexandria, VA. Owner Gary Oelze is a true impresario, his club is an influential crossroads for generations of American music, and through dozens of interviews and spectacular images Stephen Moore has done a masterful job capturing some of the best stories about performers, from Ray Charles to Vince Gill. The Birchmere is such a special, rare, community oriented venue for popular and vernacular music, wonderful to see it documented. A nice little gift for the holidays too.
