The Poetry of Hanshan (Cold Mountain), Shide, and Fenggan (Library of Chinese Humanities)

"The Poetry of Hanshan (Cold Mountain), Shide, and Fenggan", a bilingual edition of the Hanshanzi shi ji (The Cold Mountain Master Poetry Collection), is a collection of over three hundred poems (in this edition 313) attributed to a legendary Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE) hermit/recluse who took the name Hanshan (Cold Mountain or Cold Cliff) from the area in which he lived in the Tiantai Mountains of China. Complete editions of the collection usually include, in addition to the poems of Hanshan, about 50 poems attributed to the monk Shide and a couple of poems attributed to the monk Fenggan (the numbering varies slightly depending on the source edition but in this case it is 54 poems by Shide and 2 by Fenggan). This translation is a complete rendering of what is thought to be the earliest surviving edition, which it is believed was probably produced some time in the early to mid twelfth century. (I believe Red Pine's complete translation (which I also recommend) is based on a slightly later edition, from the latter part of the twelfth century).It is delightful to have this valuable addition to the English translations of this wonderful work.
