Still holds up
This was my favorite book in second grade and was delighted to find a copy. I have vivid memories of ordering it from the Scholastic book catalog poster. The story combines many classis themes (abandoned children, magic, trying something new.) It is interesting that it is able to feel like a period piece and fresh at the same time. The only drawback I find now is that is feels too short, but that did not seem to be a problem what I read it originally. Too bad Ms. Chew is not here to write a sequel!

Great stories our son loved as a child
Great stories our son loved as a child, thought the grandkids would too. Can't have too many books at Grandma's house.
