Q: What size drill bit is needed?

You DO need a drill bit. What size please. The bar is worthless because the bolt is not tightened so it just spins.

Q: How much weight are these rated for? Need for yard shed to meet code in Minnesota.

That would be a manufacture question

Q: Does it work well in the sand?

Yes. They are long and go far enough to grip.

Q: After removing the top plate is the loop removable from the plate? I would like to use the anchor with just the plate without the loop.

Not without making major modifications to the top plate. The metal loop is installed through the top plate via those cut outs made in to the top plate. You could cut the loop with a grinder then, when it is in two pieces, remove the pieces from the cut outs in the top plate. Hope that helps.
