I took out my carpet and left the padding, then put down the rolled rubber over the pad. Perfect balance of cushioning and firmness for a variety of workouts. If you are deadlifting or dropping heavy weights, just get a thicker mat for that area. One last tip: use cheap quarter-round trip along walls to cover up cutting imperfections... you will never be able to get the mat to go perfectly along the wall, no matter how straight you cut. If you cant tuck under the existing wall trim, just add quarter-round trim. I wish I had more honest reviews when I debated for hours on which product and thickness to get. It's perfect. It's heavy enough so that it doesn't move around and stands up to the dirt I constantly track in.
