What material is the board made of and can I use regular chalk on it?

The writing surface is Masonite painted with black chalk paint. Although this is called a "chalkboard," it is really meant for liquid chalk markers. Regular chalk does not stick well and after you do get it on it on by grinding over and over your lines it leaves ghosting marks. So this is a great value for restaurants and businesses but not for kids. Slate is double the price and hard to find, but well worth the money.

I see that some chalk markers don’t work well. What should I look for to buy the best chalk markers for this board?

Anything water based should work. We were able to erase/remove the water based markers we had with wet paper towels or Clorox wipes.
