I already own the controller, is the attachment by itself an option?

Only on Hori's official site. It's $29.99.

where can I buy the attachment on its own?

As far as I remember before this came out HORI stated it was different than the original split pad and they do not work together.

What if I only wanted to buy the attachment?

Try hori's site directly, I saw that they have the attachment part for $40
