Essential for Improved Engine Operation
I have a 2004 Ford F150 5.4L with 247k miles on it. I started to notice that it just wasn't operating as it should. At times it would stall when I turned the steering wheel too hard to the left or right. When I would ask it to give me some of that horsepower it would bog down before accelerating. So I decided to give my Black Stallion at comprehensive tune-up. Of course this means replacing coils, fuel filter, and the dreaded spark plugs (that's an entirely different story). After performing all those procedures my truck was operating much better, but I still wasn't satisficed with way the RPMs fluctuated. After some research I came to understand the importance of the VCT solenoid. Here comes the testimony! I can't impress on you more about the importance of those two VCT solenoids to the overall operating performance of said type engine. My truck idles as smooth as when I first purchased it and delivers all the power and instant acceleration that I always enjoyed! The installation is not complicated. The hardest part is getting the old gaskets out. I used a screwdriver to pry up the tabs and a pair of grip pliers and needle nose pliers to remove them. I purchased the long T27 hex bit with 9" shaft to unscrew the screws because you DO NOT want to drop a bit inside your engine. I found that the 9" shaft was a bit too long because the power steering bracket on the driver's side gets in the way. I still managed to remove the screw anyway, but it was slow going. It made quick work of the passenger side screw though.

NOT OEM PARTS. NOT FORD PARTS
Ordered these VCT Solenoids based on their description and the fact that they are "OEM" Our Mechanic pointed out that these are in no way OEM parts. No factory bag as pictured in the description. Received in a generic box. See pictures above. No numbers on the upper portion of the plastic Solenoids. And the bolt that holds the Solenoid into the block of the motor does not have stoper. See picture 2. The factory VCT Solenoid does. This is a huge issue on installation. If this bolt falls out on installation, you will have much larger project on your hands. Wish I would have returned these and purchased OEM.

Seals didn’t fit 2009
Solenoids were the newer/updated solenoids for the 5.4L 3v, but seals were for earlier years and did not fit my 2009 - forcing me in the time crunch to go to the dealer to get the correct seals - costing additional time and money - good product, listed for wrong year on the valve cover seals

2005 F150 - Fixed chatter at 800-900rpm
Have a 2005 F150 Supercrew 5.4L with only 44k miles. Picked up a nasty chatter last week in the 800-900rpm range. Installed this set and it instantly cured it. One of the new VCT's looked like it had been dropped as it was dented on the end, not the sellers fault as it came from the factory like that. Installed it anyway as it didn't look critical at all.On the newer F150's they need to remove the valve cover (thanks engineers), but on these older guys that is not necessary and the entire job only took about 20 minutes. On the driver side you do not need to remove the power steering bracket(s), just remove the bolts on the reservoir, push it to the side and there is just enough room. Pick yourself up a T27 bit, preferably 6 inches or longer to remove the VCT screw. Cannot stress this enough, be SUPER careful you don't drop anything inside or you'll be in a world of hurt. Make sure to disconnect the battery as step 1, other than that, manual says torque the screw to 44 inch pounds and you'll be good to go.

2005 Ford F-150 5.4L
These are the updated OEM solenoids and they work great! They were delivered quickly and fixed the power issues and oil burn issues I was having with the original ones. The driver's side is a pain because of the PS reservoir bracket but the solenoids themselves were good and easy to install. Make sure you have a long T27 t-handle driver to put them in so that you don't have to worry about dropping a tip inside the valve train.
