Great for anyone with an interest in Stirlings, SOE and SAS operations, airborne operations
If I could pick a subject for a book I would like to read, the niche topic of 299 Sqn operations in WWII might not be everyones choice, but it would be mine. Family connections to a much loved uncle Den, awarded a DFC for his exploits with 299 Sqn, the sad loss of his bomb aimer to ground fire make this the most welcome and absorbing book for me. Full disclosure - I helped the author out with some information about Den's time, so I've been following the production of this book throughout and have keenly awaited its publication. I've not been disappointed. Steve Smith delves deep into the operational records and personal testimonies to give a detailed history of operations and activity throughout the 3 years 299 Sqn was active. I know the record keeping for 299 was poor in comparison to contemporary Stirling squadrons, and getting some additional information has been a challenge, but Steve has worked miracles pulling it all together the end result ticks all the boxes for me. A well produced hardback, loads of new photos, and stacks of new information. Well worth the money for anyone with an interest in Stirlings, SOE and SAS operations, airborne operations (D-Day, Arnhem, Rhine Crossing) or 38 Group. Fabulous.

Good book, poor delivery
This is a great book - detailed, full of excellent photos, and I would say the definitive work on this often overlooked unit. But the quality of the production and delivery were distinctly lacking. My copy had a page which had the bottom corner folded, torn, and the very corner ripped off. And it arrived in a card wallet, which offered no protection for the book, as evidenced by the bashed corners of the cover. So, overall, a great book, but production and delivery, in my case, let it down.

A must for anyone interested in SOE operations and the Short Stirling
Another excellent book by the author who has turned his attention to the work of 38 Group. Every page is packed with photographs and a wealth of information. Market Garden is well covered as are all the major operations flown by 38 Group. From a squadron history perspective, it ticks every single box.
