I do not have grass, but I find it very helpful for transplanting flowers and trees from pots into the soil. It goes at least 6-8" deep. You don't apply leverage, but you can switch to a regular shovel or get on the ground and use a spade. **Q: does this shovel work for cutting plugs as well as cutting through roots?** A: Yes, the surface area of the shovel is 16.25". I have used this on my yard and it is very handy. **Q: Will this work to dig out a flower bed in a sandy plot?** A: You can't go wrong for this multifunction tool. It's made well.
