Piezo refers to materials that produce an electrical current when disturbed by vibrations. In that respect, all sound reproductions are alternating but are not considered power sources. The most common of the piezo crystals are the fire-starters that create a spark when a trigger is pulled. The pickups shown in this question are discs that are glued or clamped onto soundboards or bridges of guitars to produce an acoustic guitar or drum amplification. **Q: Was wondering if these would be ok to be used on the underside of tap shoes between the tap and the shoe to pick up the sound?** A: It will pick up the the sound of almost anything but it has to be connected to an amplifier. Not sure how you would do that with shoes unless maybe using a wireless jack connection. **Q: how do you mount them?** A: I use double-sided tape. Use the thinnest tape you can find to minimize any cushioning effect that would degrade the response. **Q: do these generate electricity by pressure and mechanical stress?** A: I believe we need more information on the question. Either pressure applied to the sensor, either sound or mechanical causes internal stress on the piezo material inside creating the electrical output. If you are asking about external force being applied, it can be either air pressure or mechanical. The output voltage is a response level to the force applied, so the sound or air pressure response will be at much lower output level that if you physically impact the sensor. I used "Super Thin Double Sided Adhesive Tape 1 Inch" to hold it in place.
