The material has some give to it. I wouldn't consider them athletic but that is probably what the marketers mean.

They seem to be a little tighter in the legs than relaxed fit.

Q: How deep are the pockets?

The front pocket is 4" at the low seam to 9" at the high seam. It's a typical depth. Example: my Samsung phone is 6 1/2" x 3". It fits all the way in the pocket comfortably. The back pockets are 6" deep with security buttons, not velcro.
