I’ve had this book sitting in my saved items for awhile. I finally decided to purchase it and I’m so glad I did. I ordered the hardcover version which is very immaculately put together. Great quality. I’m very excited to actually read it and use the recipes.

I would start with Miss Emily the matriarch of Edisto Island herself. I heard her in an interview on NPR. After hearing her talk about not only her love of cooking but her love making a way for others to eat I knew I’d be purchasing her book of recipes. My book arrived I pulled it out of the box to see the most beautiful smile I’ve seen in a long time ( covid mast in part ) on the face a truly endearing chef of the people. On the cover of the book is the Gullah Gerchee woman with roots that extend to Sierra Leone a country I’ve been honored to step foot on sitting there with her crisp white apron and something tempting in her hands that I look forward to trying to replicate The book is filled with wonderful recipes some on bright sepia toned pages and there are lots of great images of islanders chowing down with gusto The recipes include FRIED ZUCCHINI , Miss Emily’s fresh mashed potatoes, FRIED OKRA,BUTTER BEANS, BISCUITS and BREAD , BAKED CHEESE GRITS. I am a vegetarian but she is tempting me with the large selection of seafoods and for those who love red meat you won’t be disappointed I don’t think. I am very happy to have this beautifully laid out book especially cause now I know how to make red rice, dirty rice and HUSH PUPPIES. Highly recommend.

Beautiful Pictures, heartfelt memories and priceless recipes. My mom and I haven’t put it down. You will know her once you read it. Thank you and worth every penny spent. ❤️

More than just a book of recipes. This book has lots of history it offers a glimpse into a time gone but not forgotten. I love the stories the pictures and the great recipes not long drawn out recipes but simple and delicious ingredients you typically will find in a pantry. Love it. Took me back to my childhood. I can smell the aroma. Thank you Ms Emily Meggett!!

The recipes are similar to those found in most Gullah cookbooks. The stories and pictures provide a nice historical perspective.

The Gullah-Geechee people are under threat from developers, and so this is an important (and tasty) piece of their cultural history.

I may buy more copies to gift. Very educational as well as delicious.
