Dowel pins work well.
Dowels pins made well and are the correct dimensions. Perfect to repair an older pine cabinet.

Crumble under pressure, NOT safe for furniture
Absolute garbage. A normal dowel pin will crack under a lot of force, but it will stay together, only some wood fibers will break. These just snap into pieces at the slightest of pressure.

Good quality dowels

Use 7/32 bit
These dowels are smaller than 1/4 inch. Started with a 1/4 inch bit but the dowel was too loose in the hole. Switched to a 7/32 bit and that was just right. Also had two of the dowels break when driving them with a rubber mallet. Consensus is these are OK dowels when precision is not essential.
