Beautiful kettle, thanks to the superbly useful review by EverLivid I was able to remove the red plastic scale inside since I, too, bought this wanting a kettle without large acres of plastic leaching and breaking down into the water. The plastic is hard AB type, a single stepped piece which curves about three-quarters around to hug onto the metal bar, and is presumably snapped on after manufacture. The most suitable tool I had was a vintage letter opener with a strong narrow steel blade, I had to apply a fair bit of pressure downwards in line with the metal bar, but then the red plastic just popped off, it appears undamaged (I did test the kettle first to make sure it worked in case I mauled it, and voided the warranty). Without EverLivid's tip, I would have had no idea how to tackle this, so thank you indeed. My hands aren't that strong but once I got the idea of the downward pressure to pop it off, it came away easily. Wrapping a tea towel over the top of your tool would also apply downwards pressure if you have trouble gripping a narrow tool hard enough to drive downwards. My letter opener is old and has soft, curved, blunted edges - if you use a new one for this, protect your hands, and check it's sturdy enough, that plastic does NOT want to let go! You need a downwards-force motion to wedge in and drive the plastic to pop off, you don't need to cut it or pry sideways. I hope in future Russell Hobbs invests the extra few pennies (which I would have gladly paid) to make gauges in steel or simply mark the interior, which is how the Max fill line is done at the top. A steel inner lid and no weird silicone (?) ring in the base, marketed as 100% stainless steel interior, would have elicited an extra tenner from me, and I'm far from rich. Best Bits: the pouring spout is controlled, tidy, and allows for rapidly filling a teapot, mug, or saucepan. I like the open handle, this allows for taking hold with slightly more versatility, you don't need to line your hand up and slot it in. Not a big issue but this feels nicer, it also makes the kettle appear less bulky. Zero weird smells or tastes, I'm super picky about stuff like that, and this passes with flying colours. Negatives: the kettle makes a faint buzzing sound as soon as it's turned on, I hope that's not a sign of an electrical fault, and will update this review if it is. Finally, this kettle has no LED at the base to indicate power-on, it's not that important but for some reason a little orange LED first thing in the morning always makes me happy, so I'll mention it here. But at time of typing it's been in service six weeks and overall, it's a total winner - can see me buying one or two more to keep handy, and save hours questing for a similarly low-to-no plastic model in future.
