It was first isolated and described in 1825 by Henri Braconnot.2 It is produced commercially as a white to light brown powder, mainly extracted from citrus fruits, and is used in food as a gelling agent particularly in jams and jellies. It is also used in fillings, medicines, sweets, as a stabilizer in fruit juices and milk drinks, and as a source of dietary fiber.

Obviously, if your goal is to thicken your smoothie, you would have to dissolve the gelatin in hot liquid first and then refrigerate the smoothie (but I don't think that is what you are asking). Gelatin helps build strong nails, hair, and joint cartilage by providing your body with raw materials for these structures. It is not a topical treatment and will have no effect whatsoever if applied externally (No, you can't improve your nails by soaking them in gelatin).
