I didn't buy it for shedding purposes, but it just so happened that it coincided with my dog's shedding. I bought it to keep her from having to wear the dreaded cone after her spaying surgery. It's easy to unzip for bathroom breaks and my dog doesn't seem to mind wearing it. Bonus that it's containing all the hair she's shedding too. She is a german shepherd so it doesn't fit super snug on the belly side towards the back. However, I still think I would purchase the xl because it was needed for the length. It has kept her from messing with her incision and from being a wrecking ball with the blasted cone. I did originally get this for my golden doodle and it was pretty tight on her and did not feel comfortable with the zipper rubbing against the incision.
