I backpack with my dog and wanted a retractable leash that wouldn't get tangled easy. The bowl was an added bonus. The locking mechanism works fine. It does NOT have a pause type press like my previous leashes. I'm ok with it. I was probably too dependent on it and giving my dog mixed signals anyway. The length is good, though I will probably cut it down about 5 feet soon. I don't want him getting that far out because of brush and such. It is strong. My dog is a 35lbs Decker. When a chipmunk crosses the trail, he hits the end of the leash. It has held up to 74 miles of trail so far with him abusing it. The bowl is a good size for water. I have another, larger bowl, that I use for food. WIth water though, I don't put out all he can drink because we have to ration between sources. The narrower bowl is great to add depth and allow him to get the water easily. I put in a few ounces at a time. The bowl has a hard plastic ring around it. For function it is great. I'm not sure if it will end up broken eventually or not. I hooked the leash to me with a very large carabiner. If I could change anything, I would cut it down a few feet, get rid of the heavy clip on the end and replace it with a sampo swivel and a light weight clip, and drill the handle to have two points of attachment on my pack so it doesn't swing back and forth when under tension. It seems to be holding up very well. It has not gotten stuck or tangled in the mechanism and has been strong enough for my almost-50 pound basset hound (who can be a real force when he's on a scent trail)! The handle is very lightweight and the button is easy to use.UPDATE AS OF NOVEMBER, 2018:: In August, my basset hound was attacked by a pit bull. This leash held up throughout the attack, which lasted several minutes until the animal control and police could arrive and get the dog off my Kirby. The pit bull had Kirby by the neck and was dragging him and flipping him around. Still, this leash held up. The leash continued to operate as normal until about 6 weeks later, when it failed to retract. My assumption was that after the incrdible amount of tension put on the leash during this attack, it had simply weaked the retracting mechanism and it finally failed. I contacted the manufacturer (through the Amazon website), mainly to tell them that their leash was superior in quality and I would be ordering another one. Much to my surprise, the company responded by telling me they would honor the guarantee, even under these circumstances, and sent me a new leash free of charge. I was amazed. I am again highly recommending this product. I did a lot of searchin' around on Amazon and in local stores for the best product versus price. I needed a leash that was durable, well-made, and wouldn't break if tugged on too hard or if it was caught on something (I'm super paranoid about them running away because of where we live). And I also needed the rope part of the leash to be light weight so that it didn't bother my cats while they walk.This Triton leash is all of the things I was looking for! It's a quality product; I'm not worried about it breaking. The ribbon rope is very light and my cat barely notices (Note: although it's light, it also feels pretty durable!) There were other leashes on Amazon that were cheaper ($6.99, $10, etc...) but I didn't want to risk a gear inside breaking or whatever flaws come with cheaper prices. There are also a lot of more expensive leashes on the market. I'd say, if you have a large, strong dog that tends to pull or chew on leashes then maybe check out something in the higher price range for a thicker rope, but I feel that this leash is perfect for small to medium animals or any casual walker.Also, if you're looking at this leash for your cat, these type of leashes in general retract kind of quickly and it might scare your cat.
