I think they kept cost down by using an 'organic' material for the face, which makes me nervous about scratching it. The one part that makes no sense to me is the dive bezel, which turns in both directions; apparently that was a property of early dive watches. It does have a little bit of friction to it, so I guess they assume that it's unlikely to get jarred out of position.
