Of course, they can play with the magnetic tiles on their own - they are so versatile, we used them to build shapes (cubes, pyramids), houses, etc. A nice addition to other types of open-ended toys like blocks! The magnets are strong, though. So young children may accidentally get their skin caught between the tiles. My child had great fun having the balls 'compete' with each other on similar runs! Would love to know if there was any way to replace the batteries in the 3 balls that are able to light up as my other child is too young to play with these now. Although described as "magnetic tiles" it is so much more than just that. It also contains several ball track pipe pieces that can snap into the tiles so you can make a large marble run! Our 8-yr old enjoys designing the track and assembling the pieces, while our 3-yr olds love it when they roll a marble through all the twists and turns. We also like the fact that the marbles are larger than normal, about an inch in diameter. Much safer than the typical small glass marbles in most sets.
