Does a switch reduce signal or speed to the item that it is attached?

A switch is a way to add additional ports. As far as reducing speed or signal that depends on several factors. The quality of the switch, the settings, and length on the Ethernet run. In most cases you will not notice a difference in speed. You can also over saturate a network if your router in not up to par to handle the added traffic if you added a bunch of switches. There are a lot more factors to consider but if you are looking to replace a wireless connection with a switch I would say you will be fine and notice added speed benefits.
