Because when you push down and squeeze a cut lemon or other fruit the base unit is strong enough not to deform, at least for the several weeks I have used the product. The pulp can be easily scraped from the perforated top unit with a spoon or finger. There is a matching key way included in the bottom and top units to prevent rotation during the squeezing process.
