The width is limited by the clothes rods. There is a maximum width that the clothes rod will expand. If you eliminate the clothes rods, then you have 2 free standing units with each having that weird top shelf. I order these so that I can make 2 tall shelving units with 4 shelves. I don't use the clothes rod or the top (longer) shelves. Then I have ordered wheels, so that they can be rolled around. I use one in a closet to hold tools and the other I use to hold pots and pans in a corner of the kitchen. By ordering this closet unit, I wind up paying less than if I bought 2 of the tall shelving units separately.
