The characters also are suffering as the increasingly large cast really is too unwieldy for Alexander to give everyone adequate page time and attention.There are some attempts to help build up characters. Clover actually gets a fair amount of backstory covered and grows a bit, but some of the others appear to be airbrushed a bit as the story remains stuck in place for a while.This is not a great volume of the series. I think that Alexander was trying to transition to a new plot thread and move the story forward, but he does it clumsily and mostly by throwing out what he originally stated was the main storyline. After all by this time Daniel and his companions haven't moved their caravan one inch since early in book 5. In addition Clover's tragic past is revealed and that made me cry. As if the ending to Volume Six wasn't enough, Volume Seven brings us right into the action as Daniel and his girls face a new set of challenges.Daniel's quest was never meant to be easy. He can hardly travel anywhere without something crazy happening within a day. In this book, however, he and his family are faced with some dark threats and tough decisions. Between having a demonic force in their presence, a tender-hearted harpy with low confidence, and a strange disembodied voice (who clearly has ulterior motives), Daniel is in for much more than he bargained.Along the way, he and his girls are faced with terror, frustration, hatred, forgiveness, love, sorrow, suspicion, and amazement. Clover's inner pain comes to full light, Triska's life and self are changed forever, and Daniel's growing powers are beginning to define who he is. He's not just a man with a crazy idea anymore; he's on the verge of becoming something extraordinary, and yet that very power may put him and his girls in danger. . .for there is something old and evil, waiting ever so patiently to ravage the world of Eden.Again, I have to commend Alexander Gordon on his ability to create terrifying villains. Honestly, I don't whether to say "congratulations" or "how could you?" I have NEVER seen such disturbing evil-doers like these in fiction. Even Lord Voldemort, in all his cruelty and power, couldn't compare to the two malefactors in this book. Despicable, cruel, without any ounce of humanity, pity, or conscience, these villains made my skin crawl and my stomach lurch. I grinded my teeth as these horrible abominations tore apart innocent lives. I truly fear for the future of Daniel, his girls, and their quest.Tread carefully, readers. This book has some very dark moments.Final Score: With engaging characters, blood-pumping action, blood-chilling evil, and a sense of mystery for what's to come, I'll gladly keep on reading.
