Days and Nights of Love and War

A Meditation on Reality
Eduardo Galeano's 'Days and Nights of Love and War' moved me in a way few books have the power to do. It is an extensive journey through the horrifying realities of Latin America during the 1970s. There is a seamless integration of the personal and the wider political landscape, with Galeano's journalistic accuracy interwoven with intensely beautiful, poetic and descriptive prose. The minute details of everyday lives merge with the brutal and overarching context of their existence, in which obliteration is swift, easy and abrupt. A phenomenal book.

Revealing! A real mind opener on Latin America and U.S. foreign policy! Should we call it imperialism? A must read! Thank you Amazon for bringing this out in a Kindle edition because the book is WAY OUT of print. A must read if Americans want to know the damage caused by its policies and those of its corporations in Latin America.

a life in light and shadow
Days and Nights of Love and War might be the most moving and inspirational book I've ever read. It weaves together organically like many memories: without chronology, in snippets that each form the tiny brushstrokes of a life. Struggle for a better world can never exist only in antagonism. In fighting the dominant system, one must remember and care for the tiny and profound details that make the world a place worth fighting for. Galeano knows this intimately. Between scenes of bloody state repression he gracefully intertwines stories of lovers, children, lore, and friendship. It is in this juxtaposition that life gains potency and motion. It is precisely why (a la Che Guevara) because of deep love, one fights.

A gorgeous book --- heart-wrenching and inspiring.
This book is for anyone immersed in the human condition, waging a war internally and silently stuggling externally. Galeano's collection of thoughts and essays and stories stirs the emotions of the reader and forces them to consider the entirety of the Latin American canon of literature as a formidable one. It encompasses genres such as autobiography, biography, testimony, prose, and short story. This is poetry of the soul for the soul, and shouldn't be limited to those obscure literature classes dealing with oppression
