what visible distance are the projecting lines ?

Depends on how bright the area you are using it is and the color it is hitting. Manufacturer spec says 50 ft. The longest straight shot in my house is just over 60 ft and the line is clearly visible on a tan wall.

How thick is the line the laser projects?

The thickness of the laser line is .125" (1/8") wide.

Is my unit defective or does everyone's laser turn off if it's picked up and set back down? The absolute slightest vibration will turn mine off.

It will blink and turn off if the gyro inside indicates that it is not level. If it isn't blinking before shutting off then it is probably defective. Mine blinks for a few seconds then turns off if it is bumped and needs to be reset to level when it is not locked in position. Although it shouldn't be turning off from minor vibrations caused by working near it.

Is it possible to detach the laser from the magnetic support bracket?

I didnt open the box and check. Because some buyer dont like that. They feel it is used.However, my memory told me it is integrated bracket, that means you cannot detach it. Only dw083k dw085k dw088k dw089k you can detach laser from bracket
