Q: Is this safe for cutting boards and chopping blocks

It is a petroleum free product. It can be used on cutting boards and wood cutting surfaces. Be sure to clean The Cutting Board switch Lite bleach water after you have allow the oil to soak in for 24 hours to sterilize the surface for food preparations.

Q: Can i use this to lightly stain wood? i have a new ikea tarva bed that i want to lightly stain with a non toxic, natural stain.

This is just a natural oil to keep your piece healthy looking, not dull. There is no stain (color added), but it wouldn't hurt your item at all.

Q: Is it sufficient to use this for a untreated new pine dining table (or is something like polyurethane better?)

You will have a much more beautiful piece of furniture if you oil the wood first wait 72 hours and then clear coat it with polyurethane for durability.

Q: Do you think this will work well for carved basswood figures? Would it work to apply the oil, let dry, and then paint with acrylics?

I have used Caron & Doucet Natural Wood Conditioning oil on maple, cherry, mahogany, rosewood and olive wood. I don't see why this oil wouldn't work well on basswood. However, it may darken the carved figures as the oil soaks into the basswood. Particularly if the basswood has become dry. But it works well. I will always have some on hand for oiling wood. Regarding acrylic painting over an oiled finish. Don't know that answer. Typically, unless it is an oil-based paint, it is not advisable to paint over an oiled finish.
