Mine shredded from the wind on the way to vacation!! Very poor quality! **Q: Do you need a roof rack for this?** A: Yes, but I purchased the separate hooks that attach to the straps so it can be used without racks. **Q: What is under the cargo carrier to protect the roof ?** A: I purchased a roof liner ($13) so the roof would be protected. The cargo carrier does not have the non-slip/non-marring protection. Let's just say, I should have tested it. While driving down the Interstate, we heard some noise and thought we had a flat tire. We pulled Over to find the entire top ripped and was flapping in the wind. Lucky none of our stuff flew out and caused an accident but it required some pretty tight miles for the rest of our trip. Also, it was not water resistant either.
