Cut time to sharpen blades and produced better edge
I always thought that a file was a file was a file. This one has proven me wrong. I purchased the larger file for sharpening the three blades on my mower. It cut quickly with the cross-cut side of the file and then finished with a relatively smooth edge on the single-cut side. It was worth the money to me and I would recommend it if you frequently use a file to sharpen garden tools. As a bonus, it took less time to rebalance the blades by quickly removing material with the cross-cut.

Lives up to the German reputation.
When I needed a file to sharpen my lawnmower blade I Googled, "German made steel file for lawnmower blade sharpening" and these files were among the search results. I tried out the smaller one today on an electric lawnmower blade with good results. The file cut easily into the metal and sharpened the blade within about 15 minutes. These files are very fine and leave a nice finish on steel. To make them last longer and to keep them from getting all "gummed up" with steel particles I applied a good coating of common sidewalk chalk to the cutting surfaces of the files. It keeps the steel particles from fusing to the file and makes it very easy to clean off those particles with a file card. Once in a while you actually GET what you PAY FOR.

Compact for carry
This product performs very well. I purchased it to sharpen mower blades and axe heads. First use was mower blades. I was concerned about the size of the file. It seemed very small but the size turned out to be about right for the job. I do a lot in the field using knives and axes teaching youth Basic Survival. I love the product. Typically Germany knows their steel. I purchased for a quality product and I am so far pleased with the performance and quality.

File set works very well
Excellent coarse and fine file set used in the field to keep my cutting tools sharp. Finish file tunes axe edges quickly. Coarse file can reshape blade edges or remove dings and burrs. Both file handles feel a little sharp in the hand, so I wear leather gloves when using. Files clean easily with a standard steel file card or small wire brush.Very happy with this set.

before you buy online go to the store
Okay so maybe the one I got wasn't heat treated correctly it only removes small amounts of metal on both sides of the file however on older axes like most Plumb axes it felt like I glided off the metal not removing a flake but the $10 file at home Depot works on everyone of the 60+ axes I own might be worth saving $16 and taking a trip to the store.

The right file for a German axe.
The crosscut side cuts a little faster, the single cut side cuts a little smoother. I touched up my new axe edge and it's scary sharp. I don't plan to follow up with a stone, don't see the need. Watch your fingers!
