Q: Can this be used in place of the 2 inch thick foam sheet I use now?

Not sure what your application is. Not sure if this will work. I use this foam as a pre-filter for a bird bath. I cut a sheet into 3 pieces about 2” wide and placed them into an upside down plastic box. The box has holes on each side and this foam works PERFECTLY keeping the water clean for about 3 weeks. A brick on top of the box seals the foam against the bottom and prevents floating.
