Perfect for 8 year old! Simple but still cool
I bought this for my 8 year old daughter for Christmas. It was just right! I really love the external speaker so we can listen to music together (like you might do from your phone). Other people mentioned that the radio doesn't work well, and that's true. We live in a big Midwest City and can only get one station. The games are basic, but cute. The layout is easy enough for my daughter. The battery life is long, and the limits on the volume really works well to protect their ears from hearing damage (research this bc ear buds are awful!). But the limit is safe. Now some people mentioned buying these for a 2 year old (first of all, really?), and it's no where near simple enough for really young kids. I would estimate it would start at a saavy 5 year old being able to operate. Cute design, it is smaller than I thought (look at the specs). Hands down, I'm satisfied. Great option to give music with protection from functions of internet and cellphone, with a splash of games, good battery, and hearing protection built in :)

Could not connect to laptop after one use
Liked the player at first and easy to transfer songs. However, could not connect to laptop after one use. I tried connecting with three different laptops, and still didn't' work. Have returned the item.

LOVE IT!
We got this as a Christmas gift for a 5 year old. I LOVE IT! It's easy enough to use that he can do it on his own. So far, we haven't run out of space with two dozen songs and some podcasts. It will hold "pictures" but they are grainy like from a really old cell phone. But - I didn't buy it for that. The sound is good quality. I like that it's not ridiculously loud. If you want it louder - attach a speaker OR headphones. I haven't timed the battery life - but it goes for hours. Still running strong 4 months later. I haven't put any of the MP3's on (my husband does that) - but he seemed to figure it out easily and quickly.

Overall the best I could find for 2 year old. Built in speaker is poor, needs kid proof setting.
Overall it's a great little device. It was difficult to find a small mp3 player with built in speaker with simple physical controls so my almost 2 year old could turn it on and flip through songs, given this is the only one I found it gets 4 starts on that alone.PROS:- great size for little hands- functionality: the software is pretty good with lots of options- no touch screen, operation is with physical buttons- battery life is goodCONS- would pay higher price for a better speaker. The sound quality through it is not just tinny (unavoidable due to size) but it distorts easily and overall sound like it's probably a very cheap paper cone type speaker.- the firmware is good but it should have an option which limits buttons to either play/pause, next song. It's too easy for my son to get into a mode (like "settings" or "games"which he can't get out of. "Young child mode" would be great.-no battery indicator

Awesome idea!
My son is instantly dancing around and very happy! He is 18 mos old. Has a couple pretty good songs so far. Will let you know how it holds up. Just got it today.I wanted a music speaker for my son, that was simple and had more music that wasnt lame! Most things are either headphone only, no internal memory, lame songs, have horrible reviews, or have a USB stick that my son can easily break inside of it.I love the idea that it is expandable, and the microsd slot is very hard for a small child to mess with.I love the idea that it has a couple games. His first simple games when he gets old enough!(if it lasts, fingers crossed)Its boxed well. When I received it I almost thought it was a gift from someone else, box is cute and very easy to gift!It has a LCD type screen and I'm really impressed with the quality.I would have LOVED this as a kid, teenager or honestly, for camping trips and stuff as an adult. You can use headphones too! It's a win win!
