It is like getting a professional router at a home price. I must qualify this by saying that this is the first stand-only router I've owned. It has a well-written 900 page manual (available by download). It not only routes, but it can do spam filtering, bandwidth management, VPN, IPSEC, and lots of other stuff. Some of the things like spam filtering require a subscription. It collects statistics. It is managed via a web-based GUI. It works quite well, but could be a tad better organized. (I've always got to go to the "site map" to get between things.) But this navigation thing is something you quickly get used to. Not really a problem. The one serious problem is that the serial port command line interface does not work properly. One of the commands is "interface" followed by an interface name, and that is supposed to get you into a sub-command prompt for managing that interface. But it just says "syntax error". Now I must say that after this experience, I discovered that there was a firmware update. I've not tried it since I updated the firmware. Here is how I use it: I've got AT&T U-verse. I use its WiFi for my internet radio, and my cell phone, and also for guests. One port on the U-Verse router comes into the ZyXEL's wan port. I have my desktop computer, Linux box, and RAID storage server plugged into wired ports, and my laptop is on the ZyXEL's WiFi. The U-verse modem/router doesn't even have any way to update the firmware,and there is a good chance that the bad guys have found plenty of vulnerabilities. I was told but support this was a hardware issue (even though the SAME thing happens on 2 of them) - they told me they would be testing and sending a new unit as of Jan 2013 - nothing. So - now the device has wireless turned off and is acting as their CHAPER wired model. I couldn't be more disappointed or disgusted with ZyWall and their handling of this. I can tell you I will NEVER buy another one of their products EVER again. (UPDATE DECEMBER 2012) - As you can see in the comments ZyWall cared enough to reach out to me and get me in the support loop. Still having the issue but am working with a dedicated support rep who seems to know what he's doing. Here's to keeping my fingers crossed that we can determine the root cause of the stability issues with the WLAN. ------------ I have been running ZyWall products for years and love them because they LAST for years. I agree with many of the other reviews here these are not your friendly "easy to set up" products - they carry the ISCA labs certification because they are rock solid and through that comes complexity of configuration. Still - you can find the information you need on the web or in their support docs. This review is because of some unacceptable stability issues I have experienced on 2 pieces of hardware with this model and the latest firmware. At random intervals the wireless network will just stop. It's there, you can see it, but it will fail to pass traffic. There is never anything in the logs, nothing in a capture, it's like it never stopped - except there's clearly no traffic. The hard wired network continues to function fine without issue. Here's the licker - any change vi the UI to the wireless configuration - no matter how small results in the wireless network becoming available again. Change the channel - works. Change a DHCP time-out setting - it works. The change shows in the logs and immediately all the activity shows in the logs. It's nuts. Given there's no artifact of the event there's nothing support can offer yet the event happens 1-2 times in a 24 hour period. Second piece of hardware does the exact same thing when configured the same. Worst part about this is - it's a very basic configuration with the WLAN bridged to the LAN and a cable modem on the outside. Add insult to injury - a less than fifty dollar Medialink Wireless N Router works just fine 24/7.
