Which side is hard and which side is soft? They both feel like hard rubber/plastic.

Mine is orange and yellow. The darker, denser orange color is definitely rubber and the lighter yellow color end is a harder plastic and almost see through around the edges. You can tell the difference by rubbing each side in your hand and feeling the texture, weight, and density. I use the harder plastic for assembling metal rack shelving, unfinished furniture assembly, and repairs and the rubber end for assembling cabinets, shelves, and office desks that come with a laminated or stained finish that I don't want to scratch. Is this made in the USA?

Most of the Estwing Sure Strike line is made in China or Taiwan. Vaughn makes an almost identical mallet in the U.S., and replacement faces are easier to find (possible the replacements fit both brands in the 24oz.). I like the 12" fat handles much more on the Estwing than on the 14" Vaughn, but otherwise, the U.S. built Vaughn has my vote. If I used these mallets on the job more than once or twice a month, then I would swap out the handles between the two, and save the Estwing headed one as a backup/loaner.

Quality Mallet
