Becoming Raw: The Essential Guide to Raw Vegan Diets

The definitive Raw Diet resource
I will try to keep this review short and sweet. When my wife and I discovered Raw Food as a lifestyle 9 months ago, I fought against it tooth and nail. I went along with it, but it was rough. I was looking for anything to dispute it and knock it down. One of the main things I used against it was that most raw foodists and their way of conveying the greatness of raw food was purely based on faith. Most raw foodists want you to take them at their word when they talk about the health benefits of such-and-such vegetable, or how food enzymes are killed during such-and-such cooking process. I hated it. I wanted references. I wanted scientific studies and proof to back these claims. Now, 9 months later, I cannot deny the excellence of this diet, or the facts. I had to come to these conclusions on my own, however, by seeing the results evident in my own life. I had to search and search to find the facts and studies I needed to TRUST raw food completely. I SO wish I had this book 9 months ago, because instead of fighting and struggling to convince myself of the truth, I could have just read this incredible book and been unable to argue it from the get-go. Having been through college, to read a book laden with literally hundreds of references to other books and scientific studies with undeniable proof, was a real treat and truly made me RESPECT this movement and the people that are a part of it. It's not just a bunch of happy, healthy "fanatics" who just tell you how great it is. Now, it is people are are happy, healthy, and have the FACTS to back it up. This book is excellent, and very much to be trusted. This IS the college textbook on raw. Not only does it portray facts, statistics, histories, and literally anything you could want to learn about raw, it also includes full menus and recipes at the end, thrown in for good measure. How nice is that?! Very! However, it is worth noting that this is not a recipe book, but rather it is an encyclopedia on everything pertaining to the raw diet. I highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to learn about raw, and even those who desire a formidable opponent to try and argue against. If you do try to argue with what this book says, you will fail EVERY time, and for that it is the best raw book ever made. Now, whenever you face the raw food haters out there, and there are so many in every person's life that it is ridiculous, you have the ultimate source of encyclopedic knowledge to prove to anyone that this is the true way to live. Not only that, but you will have no doubts in your own decision to be Raw, whether you're increasing the raw food in your diet or becoming a raw foodist 100%. I cannot give this book enough praise. Buy it, read it, and enjoy the learning.

Very informative
I decided to try going raw due to some health concerns which came up for me recently. I've been a healthy eater for years now, so the raw thing isn't really TOO much of an extreme for me as it would be for some people. Although I'm not strictly vegan (or even vegetarian) with my normal diet, I always look for veg-friendly alternatives if I can find one. I know "going raw" is sort of controversial, so I wanted to be as informed as I could be before fully taking the plunge. I initially read one of Victoria Boutenko's books, which got me off to a good start, but I wanted more in depth nutrition information. Victoria Boutenko recommended green smoothies, but a person can't live on green smoothies and fruit. Or at least, I didn't feel I could! Once I started practicing a raw diet, something always felt like it was missing at the beginning, and I couldn't figure out what. I was still craving things, and it seemed only a hot meaty soup could hit the spot most days. Becoming Raw is great in the respect that it opened my eyes to some of the things which my body may have been lacking. Once I located my symptoms in the book and included more sources for the lacking nutrient, my cravings for meaty soup subsided. The author goes into detail about most (if not all) of our key nutritional requirements, which fruits and veg are sources for each nutrient, and what things to look out for which would indicate a nutrient deficiency. She also goes into detail about how each nutrient works together to create other nutrients, which I found to be extremely helpful (when I say nutrients, I'm including everything in that description...minerals, vitamins, micro-nutrients, etc.). Although the book is written with a focus on raw vegan diets, I think this book could be a valuable asset to anyone looking to learn about nutrition. I learned a lot from reading it and still reference it from time to time. The recipes, however, I found to be overly complicated or contain too many ingredients. It's easier sometimes to just eat fruits and veg cut up than it is to mix and mash them into things we recognize as foods. Peeling, cutting, and otherwise preparing raw fruit and veg is time consuming enough! I don't need extra stuff to do! But that's just me. The recipes do sound tasty, I'm just too pressed for time to go all gourmet with my raw foods right now. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn about how to meet nutritional requirements on a raw diet, and also anyone interested in learning about how your body breaks down and assimilates nutrients! I certainly learned more than I expected to!

Good resource
I really like this book as It provides a lot of the scientific basis of raw diets which most books on raw and vegan eating don’t always have. Which helps you err on the side of caution when experimenting on raw diets.I am a rather intuitive person and more attracted to the 80 10 10 way of eating. But I appreciate evidence based science and reading more about nutrition and holistic medicine.I would recommend reading this as well as 80 10 10 and Dr. Greger’s How Not to Die

Arrived much ahead of time and in good shape
The book came much before the limit date and as I expected. I could tell it was used but almost as new - the marks of use were discrete. I'm happy I bought it, I saved a lot comparing with a new book and got practically the same.

disappointing.
ok but thin on the evidence based. Sorry not backed up well, recommend Dr Greger evidence based approach over ideology with only a thing sprinkle of science

Textbook not easy reading
Being new to the world of raw food I looked around for the best book I could about 'how to' and read plenty of reviews before finally settling on this book. I was expecting an easy guide on what is best to eat, what combinations are best and an easy reference to the nutrition of the foods I'm eating. What I actually got is pretty much a degree level textbook which is difficult to follow and packed full of figures and percentages which I neither care about nor need to know. I'm still trying to get through this book, merely for the fact I've paid for it so I WILL read it!! If you want an easy read with the basics to start you off then this book is not for you - it's contents are complex & confusing enough to send you back to burger king!!
