Each character is named with a stereotype or group name that in a cookie cutter story would serve as the blueprint for an unimaginative portrayal of a well known type. In Galko, each character is given space to prove that their not a type but are in fact a complex realistic individual. The humor is somewhat risqué but honestly on par with what high school kids would actually talk about. Without oversexualing the characters the manga gives them space to talk about all sorts of real teenage concerns such as puberty, dating, and periods to more ridiculous urban legends. The main trio is endearing because despite their surface level differences they find much in common and other developing characters are enjoyable too. The trio of boys provides a nice, awkward foil while not being an automatic source of hetero live interest which honestly is a nice break. Nikuko, a more curvy girl described as buxom in the manga is known as a formidable star athlete and while there are places where she makes some self depricating jokes she’s not a joke herself like most other full figured characters in manga and anime. She’s shown as just as much an equal member of the larger group of girls in the class and even gets popular boy Charao flustered, which is a nice affirmation that all types of girl are beautiful, not just one type. From how to make up with a friend you’ve hurt to the true to life trials of bra shopping, this manga is something kids could actually get something out of reading. It’s stress on friendship and treatment if all the classmates as equals make it a great choice for anyone or any library looking to add some quality teen/young adult content. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Slightly raunchy and hilarious. *by S***D on Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2016* Sometimes the best manga and anime titles subvert popular genres, and for a number of years, the cute-girls-doing-cute-things genre dominated the anime and manga landscape. Now along comes Please Tell Me Galko-Chan which features cute girls doing funny things while acting less like moeblobs and a little more like the way that girls really act when no one is watching.Galko-chan is not technically a 4-panel manga, but its presentation is very similar to that format. Most of the stories are short gags which span a single page but a handful of the stories span multiple pages. Each story ostensibly seeks to unravel some mystery of life (do girls have butt hair, if someone is in the bathroom for more than 5 minutes should you deduce that they were doing number two, do large breasts float in water, etc.), and the humor definitely skews a little towards the raunchy side. There is plenty of discussion about body parts, bodily functions, and feminine hygiene, so if that's not your cup of tea you might do well to pass on this one.The color format of the book is unusual for North American manga, and I liked reading the many little notes in the margin about the characters. In the span of 100 pages, you get to really know the main characters, and Galko herself really grew on me. I liked how each of the three main characters, while superficially standard character types (Galko the kogal, Otako the otaku, and Ojou the rich girl), have the chance to grow beyond mere stereotypes. For example, because of her kogal fashion sense and her tendency to unknowingly say suggestive things, Galko's classmates often jump to conclusions about her when in fact she is quite domestic and naive. These little quirks make the characters believable, and that makes Galko-chan a very interesting manga.I like the slice of life genre quite a bit, but I'd found that genre had gotten a little stale and therefore Galko-chan was a welcome addition to my manga shelf. It's definitely worth a look if you like your slice of life peppered with a little bit of raunchy humor. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hands down my favorite Gal Manga and Manga in General *by D***W on Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2021* I like Gal mangas but they tend toward cringey situations with maladjusted guys. This is completely different. Yes Galko-chan is a gal (we never even learn her real name) but her interactions with guys are normal and friendly. She has great female friends and they all have talents (public speaking, general intelligence, piano playing) that break the stereotypes. When confronted with a situation that borders on adult content, the characters react like kids would, not adults. It a is slice of life school manga, but also touches on the siblings and parents as well.
