And do you just add milk & hot chocolate in powder or liquid to the cup at the top? It doesnt explain very well** A: Yes. This is nice machine that you can have kids make their own hot chocolate with no problems. My nephew and niece started to make hot chocolate with this machine when they were 5yrs old. We just let them pour their drinks from the spout into their cups while I checked the machine out to see if it was ready by touching it. I didn’t let them touch the side of it because I knew it could get really hot. So they could have some without any worries until they got old enough to do it themselves. I always pay close attention to when they make it encase they need help or anything otherwise I let them go make it. **Q: How do you know when the beverage is hot? Does it have a thermometer or is it trial and error?** A: There's no thermometer - I set a time for 5 mins then touch the plastic where the milk is and feel if it's hot! It's trial and error really but, for me, 5 mins is enough for one mug and about 7 mins for two. **Q: does the container come off to clean or is it all attached?** A: Yes, the container comes off. The lid and spout come off the container for cleaning. The directions say not to submerse the container UNDER water to clean. I just sit it in the sink(not filled with dish water) and run a wet soapy rag around to clean, then rinse and let dry. It takes no more time to clean than if you had used a pot to make hot chocolate. But you don't make a mess trying to get all the chocolate dissolved in the milk and stirring and stirring... Just pour in your milk, then mix on top, shut the lid and turn on. It's loud but only takes about 3 minutes and your ready to pour. You can use the spout, but it's just as easy to pour out the top of the pitcher. I love it! hope this helps. **Q: Is there a recall on this device ?** A: No recall on this appliance. There was a recall on a hot cocoa maker back in 2012.
