Striking back, 1940-45...
As a battered British Army completed its miraculous withdrawal from Dunkirk, Prime Minister Winston Churchill was already calling for the formation of forces able to strike back at Nazi-occupied Europe. That force, the Commandos, took some months to organize and train. By March of 1941, they were sufficiently proficient to launch meaningful raids into occupied Norway and France..."British Commando 1940-45" is an Osprey Warrior Series book, authored by experienced military historian Angus Konstam, with illustrations by Graham Turner. Much of the book is a discussion of the recruitment, training, appearance, equipment, and service of the commandos, nicely augmented by lots of period photographs and some excellent color plates and illustrations. Of equal interest are the examples of combat action. Space limitations keeps the details of combat to an unfortunate minimum, but the reader will readily understand why the Army Commandos and their Royal Marine Commando counterparts were considered the elite of the British ground forces during the Second World War. Highly recommended as a briefing but informative introduction into the Commandos, with some excellent insights into their combined operations.
