Many, many years ago, I made the near fatal mistake of not checking the ascents and descents on a particular days walking. That particular day covered 20 something miles of the central section of the Hadrians Wall path - a serious mistake! I vowed never to repeat and strongly recommend the Trailblazer Guides. In a map section at the back, there's an indispensable map and ascents/descent section which is really easy to follow and makes planning each days walk really simple for every level of fitness. The body of the book is also great with hand drawn 'mini maps' noting points of interest, campsites, shops etc. I genuinely find these guides the best, having completed 6 National Trails (and hopefully soon the SW Coast Path too).
