Melting down the glass ceiling for women - and men!
This is an amazing book and is best absorbed slowly. More slowly than my usual two-three day reading of so many books. I have made 171 notes so far and am only halfway through Gloria Steinem's book. It's a must for anyone questioning why most women fail to get near the 'glass ceilings' of commerce, professional work and academic life. A fair few men will also find answers to questions they may not have yet been able to formulate. This is a desert island book, whichever way you look at it. It gives you a historical perspective as to how and why women have been sidelined, along with black women, black men, and anyone else who gets in the way of the archetypal White Christian Male ethos, which is often brutally limiting and personally limited. It could be a very diifferent world for us all if we were able to reach out from the narrow confines of the castrating - for both sexes - elements of our conditioning. Reading this book may help you to take the first steps forward. Consider, if you will, the idea that the value you place on yourself can free you from behaving like a malfunctioning robot everywhere in life.

It made some very thought provoking points. I got lost in the more academic side of it, not because i didn't understand it, but because i thought it was going to suggest more ways to improve our self esteem. There are some activities but not many

This is a great book for women and men too!
I thoroughly enjoy Steinhem's work for healthy living. This book is so good, so far - HAve only just begun it. But she does not disappoint me ever!

Have only got two chapters into the book but really enjoying it so far. Gloria Steinem speaks succinctly and gives examples involving both men and women and talks about lessons she has learnt from her own life. Its not a how-to book but the examples of how other people have been empowered through their own life experiences are inspiring. Unlike what other readers say, it doesn't come across as bitter but passionate-showing that this is an issue she cares about a lot, as we should too.
