Review: Excellent Book for Parents Dealing with a Highly Emotional Teen and Young Adult - Book is right on target. Clearly written by an experienced professional. Both perspectives, that of the young adult's perspective and the parent's perspective, are fully addressed in a compassionate, sensible and logical manner. The issue of intense emotions in a young adult is examined in all the contexts in which it may occur including the challenges it creates for parents, and the strategies that are effective for helping a young adult with intense emotions develop healthy ways to cope with emotional pain. The title implies the book is about dealing with teens yet its content (as stated in the book's introduction) is equally applicable and relevant to young adults with intense emotions. At the very least, this book, provides understanding and empathy to parents facing difficult situations while parenting a teen or young adult with intense emotions. I would highly recommend this book to other parents facing the challenge of parenting a teen or young adult with intense emotions. Was on the search for a good book on this topic for a while, and stopped when I found this book. Review: Most helpful book for depressed teen - Daughter had severe depression and was angry and sad so much. We talked to so many experts, took training classes, and read so many books. This is the best book and also more useful than any of the classes we took. It explains what's going on and why, how to improve what's going on, and has specific examples so you can actually apply what it's saying. This is probably the 10th book I've read on this subject and this is the one I'd recommend. I reread it every so often to remind myself how to speak and act to help my daughter survive. When that's on the line, the right information is key.

Good in some parts
I kept waiting for the chapter that applied to me. Sadly never did, however good ideas on how to change language so words are not triggers.

Easy to read guide for parents and/or counselors helping parents of teens
I am a counselor and work with kids, teens and families. This is a great book for teens who are intense, but also for parents who are having a difficult time staying calm with their teens. It gives the parents solid advice in talking to their teens, and seeing things from their perspective. It also explains to parents how to use simple DBT exercises to help be aware of how they are feeling, and what to do when they want to escalate with their teen. There is no perfect way to parent teens, but this is an easy to read book that will give parents some good strategies. I intend to use it to as a teaching tool for some of my parents who are having difficulty remaining calm when their teens escalate.

This is hands down the best book for ANY parent. Million stars. Ten million stars.
We struggle with some of the issues in this book and it has been a LIFESAVER. It's been a few months of putting into practice, and honestly, I refer to the book often. Even if there is nothing pressing going on, the ideas are presented easily and in manageable, real-life ways, and I find myself going back to it. It has helped me immensely in ALL my relationships, not simply with teens. I cannot, cannot recommend this book enough. Plus - it's not too long, it's easy to read, and well laid-out. BEST BOOK. If you are hesitating, don't. I promise. If I could give it a million stars I would! ******************************************************************* to the 100 millionth power star book!

Highly recommend!
This book is fantastic. You have to read to understand. Even if you don't have a struggling teen, it makes a great little aid to parenting. Parenting doesn't come with a manual, but this sure does help!
