Fabulous picture book about a fabulous man
Sir David Attenborough is a household name that most of us will be familiar with and yet Leisa has managed to capture his life in a fascinating, fresh way which has the reader eager to turn the page and find out more about his extraordinary life. Leisa tells his tale brilliantly, drawing out interesting facts which are funny and incredible, with an eye for seeing what would interest a child reader. My son absolutely loved reading this. And Leisa's wonderful words are matched by Helen's fabulous illustrations which capture perfectly each scene as it unfolds. She has incorporated some lovely touches of humour which will have the reader chuckling along the way. Two particularly clever spreads show the wild creeping into the buildings where David is for that spread, the perfect nod to the book's title 'Wild Life'. A must read - this book is brilliant.

An Extraordinary Life
Plunging the reader straight into a famous moment where a TV presenter encounters a family of cheeky gorillas in the mountain mist, this is a biography for children that knows its audience well. The subject is Sir David Attenborough, who at 96 years old, has led a quite extraordinary life. The book takes the reader through the key moments that shaped his childhood, like being given fire salamander for his 8th birthday, a tradition he bestowed on his own son at the same age. It moves through the events that led Sir David into broadcasting to millions of viewers, bringing them the wonders and colours of our planet to their TV screens. I like the fact that Sir David’s environmental activism is highlighted, his legacy and his universal appeal. What Leisa Stewart Sharpe does brilliantly is research. Her background in journalism shines through the level of detail that’s included in this biography of Sir David. She skilfully weaves storytelling elements and real life facts together to create a very readable and fascinating account of his life.My daughter loved the illustrations by Helen Shoesmith - finding things to spot all the way through, such as David becoming an ‘an animal wrangler’ and retrieving his shirt from a reptilian mouth! There is is a sense of fun and joy in the illustrative style that will definitely appeal to children. The endpapers were my particular favourite. The end notes introduce the animals from David’s adventures and a mini museum, housing creatures and plants named after the legendary man himself. We thoroughly recommend adding 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗶𝗿 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗔𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 to your bookshelf.Thank you to the author for arranging our copy to review.
