Would this camera be good for a beginner photographer?

This is an excellent little camera! It is a little work horse! I am a professional portrait photographer and it works great for me! The counter has rolled over at 10,000 several times in the four years that I have had it. I shoot on manual, but everything is very user friendly and I think a beginner would enjoy this camera too since it has auto settings! You can shoot on auto and let the camera do the thinking for you like a point and shoot! It would be great for a beginner that truly loves photography and wants to learn! It is an all around great little camera!

Does this camera record videos?

No, this is strictly a camera for taking still photos. Other cameras in the 3000 series take both still photos and videos.

Can lenses from an old nikon 35mm camera be used with this.

What kind of Nikon is it? Dslr?

Yes. this camera was brand new in the box. It was a great buy for the money and takes wonderful pictures.
