Great radio
New to ham radio I got my general back to back with my tech. I talk all over with this radio now. Originally bought for my mobile, I love this in my shack and likely will go with a 891 for mobile as this radio is to nice to beat up.A bit of a learning curve to use, but easy enough for a new guy.

Its a Yaesu.....
What else is there to say.I paired it up woth a hustler 6btv and have been around the world. I also transport it to my truck. I work in west Texas and it comes in handy out there.

It worked but there were issues.
It worked great when it worked. I would say 90% of the time it would not connect to wires. I have the FTM 500 and would connect immediately. Programming is tough even by Yaesu standards. I would recommend but just be prepared to be challenged and look for work arounds. Youtube was my best friend for this thing solving my issues.

Good rig but prefer the FT-991 to the FT-991A
I have one of each the original (truly) FT-991 and the FT-991A the FT-991 works better but I like both. the 991A is not as well aligned and has a narrow band width on transmit which makes it require constant readjusting of the DT-gain when moving from one frequency to another.I run FT-8 and mostly answer CQs so I am constantly change frequency and have to adjust the gain all the time too. also the receiver is not quite as clean on the 991A and I can't recover weak signals as well. I work signals down to R-24 on the 991 and have trouble working R-20s on the A model. overall it is still a good rig. I think Yaesu is getting a little sloppy on the alignment on the new radios.

Shack in a box
this was my first "real" radio. I have owned Chinese radios like baofenf, tyt, and qyt for years and thats all good when you are a beginner now that i have had my ticket for 5 years it was time to step up my game and go full send and buy a legit radio. The price is a little steep but you are getting every penny's worth with this radio. Im addition to buying this radio if you are new to ham radio, please do not skimp out on your feeder lines and antennas, also use a power supply that is designed for these radios. If you use crap you will wrek this radio in a second
