The Happy Lion

I’ve got the original Happy Lion books and I wanted to share my delight in them with my grandchildren. Lovely book.

I clearly remember this from my own childhood. Loved the story & my own children do too.

Just what a grand-daughter wanted!

I first encountered Scallywag Press’ re-publication of this classic text when reviewing it for a newspaper upon its re-release in 2019. At the time, I wrote these words:“Originally written in the 1950s, this classic title gets a re-release thanks to Scallywag Press, and a charming edition they have put together too: you can feel the quality of the physical product as soon as you flick through it with your hands. The story is a quirky little tale of a gentle lion that unintentionally terrifies the townsfolk when it inadvertently escapes from the local zoo. A beautifully illustrated, beautifully presented work: full marks.”Revisiting the book for its paperback release, I’m drawn once again to how incredibly beautiful the product is, from its attractive and matching front and back covers, to the layout of text and pictures, each clearly separate from the other. Indeed, it is the divide between the latter that nicely adds a parallel to the lion’s aloofness from the developing situation.There’s a reason that some stories are destined to endure, and the timeless, sweet and innocent nature of The Happy Lion confirm its place in this echelon. Scallywag Press have set out to publish a wide range of texts, aiming to be memorable and entertaining, and this certainly fulfils their criteria. Oh, and look out for the follow-up, The Happy Lion Roars. Roooooooooaaaaaaaaaar!!!
