Would recommend for history buffs with prior exposure to WWII events
Author attempts to cover six years of conflict so some of the episodes are little sketchy, but overall, well done. Vast amount of detail is linked together in a fairly readable narrative. Would recommend for history buffs with prior exposure to WWII events.

Excellent Book
A really good book on some of the side areas of the u-boat war. The Black Sea and Baltic are rarely covered in the larger campaign. It was interesting to learn how far north the u-boats went in the Arctic.

U boats in the black sea during ww2! Need I say more.
I'm not sure if I've ever been disappointed by one of Lawrence Paterson's books. He takes a topic and gives you very in depth operational details about it. If you are expecting personal narrative and asides you will be disappointed. But if you want the nitty gritty details about what ship did what when you will be happy. U boat operations in the black sea, while relatively minor are just one of those fascinating little quirky topics that is hardly ever covered but makes for an interesting read. And combining it with operations in the arctic, great way to cover two sideshows in one regular sized book.if you like reading about operational history of uboats, this is another one of Lawrence Paterson's books that you should grab and read in a hurry. And when you are done with the book, i'm sure you'll wonder the same thing everyone else wonders.... why did they go through such a hassle to move a few of their tiny uboats to the black sea when they accomplished so very little.

Worth reading as well written and informative.
Yet again an excellent book on a little known section of the U-boat war. A readable informative book on this small section of the total U-boat war in what in truth were minor sections of the whole U-boat struggle, yet interesting snippets of special missions undertaken to drop off raiders or spy's.

The Forgotten U-Boat Wars
Lawrence Patterson continues to provide outstanding research into the Kriegsmarine of WW2, especially the U-boat service. Steel and Ice gives a more than a glimpse into the challenges, frustrations, and despair that submariners faced in both the Arctic Ocean, Baltic Sea, and Black Sea. This is one of the most balanced books on the U-boat war and certainly helps fill the gaps for researchers of the Unterseeboot fleet. As a historian and researcher into the 30th U-boat Flotilla (Black Sea Fleet), this is a welcome addition to my library.
