It requires 2 AAA batteries, and comes with 2 AAA alkalines. If you want rechargeable batteries - which makes sense, as it does tend to suck down battery charge - you can easily enough get and use a pair of AAA rechargeables, either NiMH or LiPo. (By the way, this meter works quite well for me.)

Can this measure horizontal or vertical distances like a carpet, stonewall or flagpole?

Height on outside walls is going to be a challenge. This device shoots a laser and measures from end to end. Unless you are at the top of that flagpole measuring down, or you're standing on the ground and you hit the small ball at the top, not sure this is going to work. Same thing with the outside wall. This laser has to have something to hit or bounce off of

Will this work to measure distance to the dirt slope/embankment on the opposite side of an excavation? Measuring to ensure boom truck accessibility.

Depends on the distance and time. Too far or too bright and the laser will lose too much intensity to measure accurately.

What are the angle measurement capabilities of this unit? Can you measure 0-180 degrees or only 0-90 degrees? Can you zero to measure relative angle?

In the upper right corner it will display its angle. I was able to run 0 to 90 and back through the 180 degree range and -.1 to -90 and back. Hope this helps
