I would call this a honer instead of a sharpener. Passing a dull blade through this wont bring up a razor sharp edge like some of these sharpeners will, but this wont pull a bunch of metal off your knife either. This seems more suited to keeping an edge in good condition as opposed to sharpening. EDIT: I originally gave this product a 3 star rating as a honer. Just experimenting with it brought out some great results.As a chef I'm generally using a knife about 8 hours a day. And if I'm not doing proper knife maintenance every day, I usually get about 2 weeks out of a knife before it dulls. I took one of my brand new Globals out of the box used it, passed it through the sharpener 10 times and put it away. Every day when I'm done it gets 10 passes. I realize this is knife maintenance and what should be done, but most chefs don't. Especially if you're tired and have a bazillion other knives to use. Anyway, It's been 4 months since I unboxed a new knife and this thing is still a razor blade. Like I said before, it won't bring up a razor edge, but if you put one on first, you'll keep it forever.
